Most disappointing AI answers come from short, vague prompts. A little more context changes the result completely.

The formula

  1. Context: who you are and who the result is for. "I run a two-person plumbing business in Leeds."
  2. Task: exactly what you want. "Write a reply to this customer email."
  3. Facts: the information it must use. Paste your prices, policies or notes.
  4. Rules: what it must not do. "Do not invent prices. Under 100 words. If unsure, say so."
  5. Format: how you want it. "A table", "three bullet points", "an email with a subject line".

Before and after

Before: "Write a reply to a customer asking about prices."

After: "I run a dog grooming salon. Reply to this email using only these prices: small dog £35, medium £45, large £55. Friendly tone, under 80 words, and offer the two next free slots: Tuesday 10am and Thursday 2pm."

Tips that help

  • Give an example of a good result and ask for the same style.
  • Ask it to list anything it is unsure about.
  • Correct it in the same chat; it will adjust.
  • Save prompts that work in our prompt library format, with placeholders in curly brackets.
